The Huawei and its Mate range is something that draws much attention. Last year with their Mate 9 showed that they were able to offer an interesting product in price and benefits.
This year, with the new Huawei Mate 10 Series are exceeded, demonstrating to the competition that you can make attractive products without firing its value above 1000 euros.
Huawei in design has taken a turn with respect to the one seen in the Mate 9. It follows the current canons imposed by the market and gives the jump to the crystal like main material.
A tempered glass for the rear that says to offer a great level of resistance. We will see if it is so or not.
Of course we have experienced some drops of Mate 10 and the terminal remained intact. With this combination of materials at the aesthetic level in both Mate 10 and 10 Pro are very attractive.
And not only that, the feeling of holding them in your hand is really good. Although we must make a couple of mentions that we believe important. Mainly by the screen used in each.
The Huawei Mate 10 mounts a 5.9 “panel and 16: 9 aspect ratio. The Mate Pro 10 rises to 6 “and changes to 18: 9 aspect ratio. Although both have very small frames, there is only one millimeter of difference, the format of the screen makes the Mate 10 result more square.
That feeling of being more square at first puzzles. In Mate 10 Pro the opposite happens, despite having a longer aspect ratio the feeling to hold it is more natural.
Moreover, with differences also in the location of the sensor, the Mate 10 has managed to keep it in the front while the Pro 10 takes it to the back, the curvature of the rear glass makes both comfortable to use despite require both hands for comfort. Of course, the prints are easily marked in both and in all their colors.
Of course everything will be a matter of taste but once seen the two models we would not know which is better. The Mate 10 even though it does not carry that surname Pro does not look like a product in the shadow of Mate 10 Pro. It may even be more interesting.
The Cameras of the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro
Both phones have the same dual rear camera configuration – which Huawei has designed with Leica – thus finding a camera with a 12-megapixel RGB (color) sensor along with a 20-megapixel monochrome (black and white) and aperture lenses f / 1.6 – it would be the largest, and therefore luminous, so far seen in a smartphone next to the LG V30 .
Remember, though, that the LG phone uses the combination of wide-angle telephoto instead of color-monochrome.
The results obtained with the cameras of the new Mate 10 are quite good, with clear images and a good reproduction of color.
This is thanks, in part, to the artificial intelligence that integrates the native camera application. Surely you remember that in the recent IFA 2017 , Huawei announced its Kirin 970processor , a new chip that was called to bring to life the next big phones in its catalog and which had primarily been designed with one thing in mind: artificial intelligence (AI ).
Well, the time to put it into practice has come with the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, which Huawei dares to call “smart machines.”
In the case of the photographic section, the camera of the Mate 10 is able to recognize the object to be photographed and automatically adjust its parameters to make the best capture.
I’m not just talking about ISO, exposure or white balance in real time; also of the later processing of the photo. If you take a photo of a cupcake on a plate, the phone will recognize that it is food – it will actually appear in an icon at the bottom left of the screen indicating it – and will adjust the saturation to make the food colors richer never better said) and real.
Huawei points out that the camera can recognize up to 13 scenes at this time, including landscapes, low light, portrait, flowers, sunset, snow, text, cats and dogs – yes, there are different configurations for these two types of animals and we do not know for what reason. The company says that over time its AI platform will evolve to recognize more scenes and learn to identify more objects.
The 8 megapixel front camera of the Mate 10 does not support this incredible scene recognition feature, but it does have a bokeh effect for selfies that will surely appeal to lovers of self-images – in vertical, yes.
Unlike the Huawei P10 , which also features a portrait mode in the front camera, the Mate 10 again uses artificial intelligence to better identify the faces in the image and thus apply a blur in the background more accurately.
The tests with this mode were nevertheless not as successful as the previous ones, with moments in which it recognized well the faces and others in which it erased parts of the head. Looks like we need to polish it a little better.
Kirin 970 and 4,000 mAh Battery are Two of its Weapons
At the level of components as you have already seen, except for the subject of the screen, the extra 2GB of RAM in the Pro model or differences such as the inclusion of headphone jack in the Mate 10 that the Pro does not have, both terminals share sheet technique .
That means they have the same Kirin 970 processor, 64GB of storage, dual camera system, 4,000 mAh battery and connectivity options such as Dual SIM (only for some markets) or data networks that could reach up to 1.2 Gbps.
During the time of use both system and different installed applications have behaved really well. Everything goes smoothly as expected, load times are more than right and those improvements that Huawei commented, that invisible part offered by the Open AI Ecosystem and the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) integrated in the new chip, seem to work.
From the battery, after a first charge and give it use, we stay with how well it is managed, with a consumption that augurs great news for those users more demanding and intensive. Although what will surprise will be the work done with the fast load. In only 30 minutes it reaches 58%.
If we consider that we are talking about a 4,000 mAh battery, we charge 58% in just half an hour seems a figure more than good. Then to reach 100% and because you have a reference, it takes the same as the One Plus 5 that offers a battery with 700 mAh less.
